SYNOPSIS: When her mother goes missing in the desert between the US/Mexico border, Solana must journey out with a group of activists to bring her back. As her past begins to haunt her, Solana must overcome a lifetime of hurt and suspicion to undertake an extraordinary transformation in the hopes of keeping her family together. My Mother the Sun is a meditation on the way borders arrest grief, the transformative power of empathy, and the need for unconditional hospitality in the face of institutional cruelty.

BREAKDOWN:
-BENITA: Solana’s mother. Mexican woman in her 60s. Loves to laugh and has a wicked sense of humor. Benita regards her daughter with the toughness that comes from generations of expectation that is laid on women in their family.
-CHERRIE: Mexican-American woman in her mid-late 30s. Lead organizer and co-founder of a migrant aid group that performs rescues and supply drops along the US/Mexico border. Having dedicated her life to something she believes in, Cherrie has a difficult time recognizing where her duties end and her personal life begins.
-WAYNE/CORONER: Mexican-American man in his 40s. A local police officer and neighbor to CHERRIE and KELLY. Extremely divorced, father to NACHO. Wayne’s the kind of guy with unintelligible politics and deep conviction that makes him unpleasant to be around.
-NACHO/CHORUS 1: A 17 year old (to be played by 18+) Hispanic dude who grew up with SIERRA. All of his clothes are a little too loose. He was raised in a conservative middle-class family, but in his adolescence he’s started mimicking tough urban cholos.
-DARREN/CHORUS 2: Hispanic man in his 30s. Volunteer with the migrant aid organization.
-ERNIE/CHORUS 3: Hispanic man in his early 30s. Volunteer with the migrant aid organization, and a scholar of desert ecology. A new father.
